Ask Lucy: How Do I Stop Procrastinating?

This week the question comes from Elena.

Lately, I have been feeling overwhelmed with my day-to-day job. By the time I get home I feel too tired to do anything else after a stressful day. As much as I want to complete my life goals I find myself procrastinating. How do I stop procrastinating?”

How do I stop procrastinating?

It seems as if no matter how bad you want to complete your goals you find ways to put them off. At first you are headstrong in going after them. Then you manage to get on the hamster wheel.

Working at your day job gives me the impression that it isn’t your first choice. Having a job while pursuing your goals is common. If your goal is to get a different career then you have to put in the time now.

Think of your time after work as your motivation in accomplishing your goals. By looking at your time as an opportunity it changes your mindset.

Completing your goals takes discipline. Try focusing on being committed to dedicating time to your goals after work.

Find time to get active. It might mean getting up earlier and squeezing in a workout. If you would rather do it after work than that might mean sacrificing something else. Look at it as a trade-off for the greater good.

Incorporating fitness into your schedule will help you from feeling tired each day. It is about setting up your day for success.

Keep your goals visible.

Blocking Out The Dream Critics Is Beneficial

Blocking Out The Dream Critics Is Beneficial

Going after your dream is an awesome journey. At first you are excited and you end up shouting it from the rooftops. You share it with each person that you believe will support you every step of the way.

You believe that all of your friends and family will be on board with your dream. What happens when you run into the dream critics though? Sometimes you may not even recognize them. They are in your circle of family, co-workers and friends.

It is one thing to listen to good advice about your dream and another to listen to negativity. Keep an open mind when people steer you away from pursuing your dream. Blocking out dream critics can be beneficial.

Are they able to prove why your dream won’t work? Recognize when someone is simply wanting you to fail.

At some point during the pursuit of your dream you will run into those that don’t want you to succeed. Their reasons may not be apparent and there may be an underlying culprit for their non-belief in what you are trying to do.

How do you block out the dream critics?

This is when you start evaluating the people who are encouraging you and those that are not. Going after your dream requires you to be committed to it no matter what. You can look at it as a weeding process.

You can block out a dream critic by not sharing your dream with them as often. Talk about other things going on in your life or listening more to what is going on with theirs. Just because someone isn’t supporting what you are dreaming about doesn’t mean you can’t be friends or at least be acquaintances.

Blocking out this type of negativity makes you more aware of what is important. It’s your dream and when you take action amazing things start to happen. You let go of what is bogging you down from moving forward.

As much as you want the support of everyone that you know that isn’t always possible. Observe the things that you notice when you start eliminating the critics. You will feel more peace with working on the things that matter the most.

You start to move towards where you are meant to go with your dream. Imagine someone telling you what a bad idea your dream is or that it’ll never work. It doesn’t exactly inspire you to be all that you can be.

Now imagine a person telling you what a great idea it is. That they believe in you and they start encouraging you to pursue your dream. That is like night and day.

I find that I am more inspired by being around the people who lift me up. The type of people who have utter faith in what I am doing with my dream. They also are the ones that do not believe in quitting because they have been through it themselves.

Who would you be more apt to listen to? I know I would be steering towards those that would push me in the right direction.

Taking action steers you towards your purpose

Do whatever it takes to pursue what you are called to do. A dream only works if you give it a chance to. Weeding out the critics is similar to weeding out your garden. When you pull the weeds out that allows the garden to thrive and flourish.

It’s true beauty has a chance to emerge and produce what it is meant to. That is the same thing with your dream. It deserves the same loving care and attention that a garden does.

Dream critics are simply potholes in the road. They are temporary distractions. They only remain permanent if you give them the power to do so.

I am going to continue navigating my own path. Although I’ll encounter those dream critics I’ll be ready to listen to my own voice: the one that knows my dreams are worth chasing. In the end you get this one life and it’s your chance to make it the best that it can be.

Are you ready to take action?

Getting Out of Your Own Way

Ever find a roadblock on the road?

Usually there will be a detour that isn’t the most convenient, but you take it nonetheless. Roadblocks come up in your journey too. That dream or goal of yours doesn’t go away because of a little roadblock.

How do you identify the roadblocks within your dream?

The biggest one that you will have is yourself. How is that even possible right? If you avoid the things that you are afraid of doing then you end up quitting. That right there is what should scare you the most.

Can you imagine not following your passion because you were too afraid to?

Not me, not even for a minute. Over the years I have been quite the procrastinator. I used to be the one that only wrote when I felt like it. I’d wait around for my muse the same way one waits to see the next rainbow.

Over the past year I have learned that my biggest roadblock has been me. Hard to admit that in public, but this is a place where I have to be honest. Fear of the unknown is a powerful thing.

Ask Lucy

In this weeks Ask Lucy segment the question comes from Kaylee.

“I work a 9-5 job, I am a wife and mother of two boys ages 15 and 17. My job isn’t a tough job, but at the end of the day I find myself feeling tired. I am always running and trying to balance life in general with my family. What can I do to still be that stellar mom and wife, but find something for me at the same time? I want to feel like I can still do all of those things, but be happy doing something for myself that makes me happy too.”

This is a great question and it sounds like you are getting mom burnout. When you work full-time it adds to the daily stress of all of your daily responsibilities. As a mother and a wife you are wearing many hats.

I can relate to what you are experiencing. After I have worked all day I don’t always have the energy to start a meal when I get home. It’s easy to get so caught up in all that you have to do, feel unfulfilled and suffer from mom shame.

Who doesn’t want to be the perfect mother, wife or employee?

Ask Lucy

In this weeks Ask Lucy segment the question comes from Miranda.

“I consider myself a fairly outgoing person. I enjoy people and working in customer service. Spreading kindness is what I do. Unfortunately, I have an employee in the workplace that is more of a naysayer and loves to spread gossip and negativity. How do you handle someone who tends to suck the life out of your day?

I love this kind of question because it’s a common problem in the workplace. It’s a topic that always comes up no matter where you work at. There is always that one person that tries to steal the joy out of the air.

They are similar to a real life thief. The good news is that they may think they have control over you, but in reality they do not.

Of course it can be hard to handle the initial shock of their behavior. Especially when you end up being on the receiving end. Once in a while you may find out a persons true colors when they gossip to others about other employees.

It’s always a good idea to check your back. On occasion you will find the occasional knife stuck in your there.

Pushing Past Doubt

Ever wonder what might happen if you pushed past doubt?

Doubt can loom over you like a dark cloud. If you allow it to have its way that is. It is a surefire way to prevent you from achieving success. Think of the reasons behind your doubt.

Doubt can hold you back for years. It’s all part of that negative self-talk that we often fall victim to. Ever look at someone else that was making it and you felt that you could never get that success too?

Feed your mind with positive affirmations to help you stay encouraged. Your mind is similar to a sponge. It absorbs the good and the bad.

Why not help it absorb the positive self-talk instead?

Maybe you have a desire to pursue your dream, but are afraid that you aren’t going to be good enough. When we see other people who are successful it can feel overwhelming in the beginning. Remember that it all takes time though.

Patience is truly a virtue. It is hard to do especially when you are anxious in completing your goals. However, it is important to do it with the right expectations.

Keeping Your Kids Inspired to Dream Big

Did you know that your child has dreams too?

If you are a parent then you understand the importance of that. Often I hear of parents that have regrets that they did not pursue their own dreams. They share how they want their children to pursue their dreams so that there are no regrets later.

For the parents that made that sacrifice I think that some of them get to live their dreams through their children. That is why some parents push their children toward that reward.

Then you have the parents that have succeeded and simply want to ensure that their children try also.

As a parent myself that is what my hope and wishes are for our boys. I want them to pursue their passion too. By having a strong faith and belief in what they are capable of doing.

What I have learned is that it is important for them to see me pursue my dreams. In this way it helps to inspire them too. I try to be the role model to show them that I believe in myself.

Ask Lucy

In this weeks Ask Lucy segment the question comes from Amy.

“What would you say to a young mother in making the decision between staying at home with her child or pursuing her ambitions? On one hand, I feel as though they are only young once and this is a once in a lifetime chance to capture the moment. On the other hand, this is such a short time that goes by so quickly; but perhaps teaching them how to pursue their own dreams is a reward in itself?”

Oh I love this question! It is so easy to be torn with this. Our boys are older now. High school and college so it does make me reflect on my own experiences.

I would tell you to go for it! Children are only young once and this is true. It’s a fact, but going after your dream is equally important. It doesn’t make you a bad mother for pursuing what you love.

I have often reflected on what it would have been like to pursue my passion as a writer years ago. I mean fully followed my gut without fear. I don’t regret the days of my work experiences or the times I was a stay home mom.

The 5 Phases Of Pursuing Your Dream

Have you ever had a dream or huge goal that scared you?

A dream worth chasing, but that looked absolutely intimidating. Enough that you’d rather hide underneath a rock instead of going for it. If you answered yes then you are not alone.

In the first phase of starting your dream you experience a high amount of energy initially. You feel like it’s too good to be true. You are on cloud nine all the way.

Is this too good to be true?

Deciding To Get Fit When You Are Busy

How do you squeeze in fitness when you have a busy life?

You know the drill you jump on the hamster wheel day in and day out. When could you possibly find room for fitness? If you are like some people by the end of the day all that you want to do is relax.

You have to decide if you will make time to get fit. Look for a time that you can work out whether it is in the morning or in the evening.

Determine if you are an early riser or if you would rather work out in the evenings. Personally I have always been a gal that prefers evening workouts. However, I started incorporating an early routine.

I have to admit it was tough to get up earlier than usual. I did it because I have always read it is important to have a morning routine. If that is the way successful people do it then I’m in.

Keep in mind to each their own. It’s whatever works out for you. Having a morning routine whether it is fitness, reading, meditating or whatever you choose to do regularly does increase your success level.

It adds to becoming disciplined daily. I know it has worked for me when I can wake up on my own without the alarm going off first. You are resetting your internal clock by the good habits that you implement.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s really a matter of choosing to incorporate it into your life. There are so many choices out there when you are ready to get fit.

Are you a person that likes to work out solo or do you need the social piece of a gym?
